Burlington is officially on the map for the FIFA World Cup 2026 — and you won't have to travel far to be part of the action.
The City of Burlington has been selected as one of 26 host communities for FIFA Canada's Canada Celebrates program, bringing a free public event to Spencer Smith Park on Thursday, July 9.
The touring celebration features live match viewings, football-themed activations, cultural programming, live music, local food, and plenty of national pride — all part of a cross-country series running from June 11 through July 19. In total, the program touches down in 34 communities across Canada, including several pre-tournament stops.
Burlington's event lands on a big day for the tournament — a FIFA World Cup quarterfinal match is scheduled in Boston at 4 p.m. that same afternoon, meaning fans could be watching history unfold right from the waterfront.
Burlington City Council gave the green light for up to $160,000 in spending back in December, which covers the required FIFA activation fee as well as local costs for programming, site logistics, safety and security, and staffing. The bill will be covered using funds from the city's 2025 surplus, redirected into the Cultural Initiatives Reserve Fund.
"The City of Burlington is pleased to have been selected as a host community for the Canada Celebrates program," a city spokesperson confirmed.
Since the event is FIFA-led, full details — including exact hours, confirmed programming, and final costs — are still being finalized and are subject to FIFA's approval. More information is expected to be released once confirmed.
For those looking to make a road trip out of the World Cup tour, nearby stops include Mississauga (July 1), Waterloo Region (July 11), Vaughan (July 15), and Brampton (July 18–19).
Stay tuned to Burlington 365 as more details are announced — this is shaping up to be one of the biggest events at Spencer Smith Park this summer.
