Burlington, Ontario is gearing up for its annual Sakura Festival on May 9, 2026 — a free, afternoon-long celebration of Japanese culture set against the backdrop of blooming cherry blossom trees at Spencer Smith Park.
The event marks the 37th anniversary of Burlington's sister-city relationship with Itabashi, Japan, and runs from 1–3:30 p.m. at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre. The program opens with local taiko drumming, followed by remarks from the mayor and Japan's Consul General. From there, attendees can watch martial arts demonstrations (Karate, Aikido, and Iaido), traditional dance performances, and a high-energy yosakoi finale. The headline act is Nagata Shachu, an internationally recognized taiko ensemble. A student art gallery featuring work from schools in both Burlington and Itabashi adds a cross-cultural, community touch.
The cherry blossoms themselves — which typically peak between late April and early May — are the natural centerpiece of the day. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the trees responsibly by sticking to designated paths and leaving the branches and flowers untouched.
The festival is completely free to attend.
