If you are looking for the quintessential Ontario winter experience without breaking the bank, look no further than the waterfront. While many people head to the mall or stay inside during the January chill, the real magic is happening at the edge of Lake Ontario.
The Burlington Rotary Centennial Pond is officially open for the 2026 season, and it remains one of the best free activities in the city. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or someone who hasn't laced up skates in a decade, here is everything you need to know about hitting the ice at Spencer Smith Park.
A 10,000 Square-Foot Winter Wonderland
Located right at Discovery Landing (1340 Lakeshore Rd), the Rotary Centennial Pond is a massive 10,000 square-foot water feature that serves as the heart of the park. In the summer, it’s a peaceful spot for model sailboats, but once the temperature drops, it transforms into one of the most scenic outdoor rinks in the province.
There is something genuinely special about skating with a view of the lake on one side and the city lights on the other—especially as the sun begins to set.
The Details: When to Go
The best part about this rink? It fits into almost any schedule.
Hours: Open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Cost: Completely FREE to the public.
No Skates? No Problem.
One of the biggest barriers to skating is owning the gear, but Burlington has you covered. Skate lending is available right on-site at Discovery Landing. It’s first-come, first-served, and they even have skate aids available if you’re still working on your balance.
Lending Hours:
Friday: 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Sunday: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM
School Breaks: 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM (Perfect for keeping the kids active!)
Make a Day of It
Because the rink is located right in the heart of downtown Burlington, it’s the perfect anchor for a full winter afternoon. You can finish your skate and walk just a few blocks to grab a hot chocolate or a local craft brew at one of the many nearby cafes and pubs.
Whether you’re planning a romantic evening under the lights or a Saturday morning outing with the family, the Rotary Centennial Pond is the place to be this winter.
