Burlington is getting its moment in the global spotlight this summer, as the city has been chosen as one of 26 host communities for FIFA's Canada Celebrates the FIFA World Cup 2026 program. The free public event comes to Spencer Smith Park on Thursday, July 9.

The Canada Celebrates program is described by FIFA as a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to carry the energy, pride and passion of the World Cup beyond the official host cities of Toronto and Vancouver. Attendees can expect live match screenings, football-themed activations, cultural programming, music, food, and moments of national pride — all at no cost to the public.

Burlington's date lands on a particularly exciting day for the tournament: a FIFA World Cup quarterfinal match is scheduled in Boston at 4 p.m. that same afternoon, meaning fans at Spencer Smith Park could be watching high-stakes knockout soccer in real time.

In total, the Canada Celebrates tour touches down in 34 communities across Canada, spanning all provinces and one territory — from Whitehorse and Halifax to Kamloops and Niagara Falls — running from June 11 through July 19. Burlington is one of 11 Ontario stops on the route.

The city didn't land on this list by accident. Burlington City Council approved spending up to $160,000 for the event back in December, covering FIFA's required activation fee as well as local costs for programming, site logistics, safety and security, and staffing. The funding comes from the city's 2025 operating surplus, which was moved into the Cultural Initiatives Reserve Fund. "The City of Burlington is pleased to have been selected as a host community for the Canada Celebrates program," a city spokesperson confirmed.

Because Canada Celebrates is a FIFA-led event, the finer details of Burlington's programming are still being finalized and remain subject to FIFA's approval — so expect more specifics to roll out in the weeks ahead.

The tour is backed by FIFA commercial partners Coca-Cola, Kia, Michelob Ultra, Hisense, and McDonald's, along with The Home Depot and media partner Bell Media, who are collectively supporting the cross-country fan experience. Bell Media is sponsoring live match feeds at Canada Celebrates events, so the big-screen experience at Spencer Smith should be top-notch.

For Burlington residents looking to string together a World Cup road trip, nearby Ontario stops include Mississauga on July 1, London on July 4, Waterloo Region on July 11, Vaughan on July 15, and Brampton on July 18–19.

Keep an eye on Burlington 365 and the City of Burlington's website for programming announcements as July 9 draws closer.
