The City of Burlington is pleased to announce the phased opening of the Robert Bateman Community Centre — a transformative, multi-use facility that will serve as a hub for education, recreation, and community engagement.

This September, Brock University will welcome students to its new Burlington Campus, a dynamic learning environment that marks a major milestone in the evolution of the City’s largest facility.

Key Milestones

  • September 2025: The gymnasiums are available for both Brock University students and the broader community until renovations begin, with efforts to minimize disruption to community access.

  • Sept. 15, 2025: Burlington Public Library opens its relocated New Appleby Branch, featuring a large lending collection, comfortable seating, digital media studios, bookable meeting rooms, and a vibrant children’s area.

  • Nov. 24, 2025: TechPlace opens to offer services to Burlington’s innovation and entrepreneurship community.

  • Fall 2025: Halton District School Board expected to take occupancy.

  • Late 2025 – Early 2026: City staff will present a comprehensive Phase 2 renovation plan to Council, focusing on remaining indoor areas and the development of outdoor spaces.

  • Early 2026: A grand opening celebration will invite residents and community partners to mark this exciting milestone.

Current Access

At this time, only portions of the facility actively offering services are open to the public. Other sections remain closed while work continues. For safety reasons, access to these areas is restricted to construction crews and authorized City staff.

Background

The City of Burlington purchased the former Robert Bateman High School site to maintain this important community asset in public ownership. Guided by a commitment to sustainability and community-building, the facility is being repurposed into a multi-purpose, City-owned, community-focused space aligned with Burlington’s goal of being net-zero carbon by 2040.

Phase 1 includes extensive interior renovations, exterior building improvements, and site plan modifications — laying the foundation for a modern, accessible, and environmentally responsible community hub.

Quote from Mayor Marianne Meed Ward

“The Robert Bateman Community Centre represents the very best of Burlington’s vision for inclusive, innovative, and community-driven spaces. This phased opening marks a significant milestone in our journey to create a hub where education, recreation, and collaboration thrive together. I’m proud of the partnerships that have brought this project to life and excited for the opportunities it will offer residents of all ages.”
