If you’re planning to head toward Niagara this weekend, be prepared for more traffic delays.

If you’re planning to head toward Niagara this weekend, be prepared for more traffic delays. The QEW Skyway Bridge will once again see lane closures from 10 p.m. Friday, June 20 to 5 a.m. Monday, June 23, as part of an ongoing rehabilitation project that includes concrete repairs, new asphalt, and waterproofing.

This isn’t the first time Burlington residents have had to deal with the disruption. A previous closure on Mother’s Day weekend led to major congestion on key Burlington routes, prompting Mayor Marianne Meed Ward to formally request action from Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria.

The city’s requests included:

  1. A full summer schedule of planned closures

  2. Advance signage at on-ramps

  3. Warnings well ahead of the Skyway

  4. Provincial funding for increased police patrols during closures

So far, only some signage improvements have been made. The city is still waiting for a response on three outstanding items, including advance public notice and support for traffic enforcement. According to the mayor’s office, only one closure is currently listed on the province’s 511 travel site at a time.

Despite the limited updates, city staff are working closely with the Ministry of Transportation to ease traffic disruptions. Some new signage improvements during the June 6–9 closure helped ease congestion, according to the mayor’s office.

Unofficially, the city has been made aware of four more weekend closures after this one, all involving two Niagara-bound lanes at a time, with two other lanes remaining open.

Halton Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police are aware of the situation. While no special traffic operations are planned, officers will respond as needed to manage congestion.

More updates are expected soon. In the meantime, Burlington drivers should brace for another weekend of delays — and plan accordingly.
